New York
1. In 1609 Captain Henry Hudson found Manhattan. He reached a river to which he gave his name. The first houses were built in 1613, the Dutch called their colony New Netherlands. In 1664 British troops occupied the city and called it New York.
2. New York is one of the largest cities in the world. It is one of the leading U.S. manufacturing cities. New York is made up of 5 boroughs: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Richmond and Bronx. The center of the city is Manhattan Island. The whole area is very small, that’s why the sky-scrapers were invented in New York and especially in Wall Street. Wall Street is the functional center of the U.S.
3. Broadway is the center of the theatres and night life. Rockfeller Center, the largest business and entertainment center in America, is located in the heart of the city.
4. Fifth Avenue is the great shopping, hotel and club avenue. If you go along this avenue, you come to Harlem, where the black people of New York live. New York is the largest port in America.
5. There are many places of interest. The Coliseum is New York’s principal exposition center for national and international exhibitions. Metropolitan Museum of Art comprises more than 365000 works of art. The Guggenheim Museum exhibits examples of painting, sculpture and the graphic arts. The New York Public Library ranks after the Library of Congress as the second largest library in the U.S. The United Nations Building, Empire State Building, Columbia University and City Hall are the structures of interesting architectural design. The Statue of the Liberty stands on a small island in New York Harbour. It was presented to America by France.
